2012 National Signing Day Predictions

For die hard college football fans, there are few days quite as exciting as National Signing Day, where the biggest high school football phenoms decide officially where they will play their collegiate ball.  This year appears to be as unpredictable as years past, as several stars are keeping their decision very close to their chest.  With February 1st looming, it is now time for  a few early predictions on which campus some of the most coveted athletes will be on come August.

As for players making an impact in their freshmen campaigns, no other play looks as poised to do so as Dorial Green-Beckham (WR).  Green-Beckham has been leaning for awhile now towards Arkansas or Oklahoma.  I for one, believe Green-Beckham Razorback jerseys will be selling like hot cakes by Valentine’s Day (if not sooner).

Kwon Alexander (LB) is among the most coveted defensive players in this years recruiting pool. Naturally, defensive stalwarts Alabama, LSU and Florida State are the leading contenders for this young athletes services.  I believe FSU is out and it could ultimately come down to who wins this year’s BCS National Championship.  In the end, I believe LSU will be the pick for Alexander.

Many believe Eddie Goldman (DT) will be one of the few recruits who will make his decision after National Signing Day.  Defensive tackles are always a hot commodity, so their is still a long list of potential suitors for Mr. Goldman and his pass rushing abilities.  His decision could be altered depending on where some of the other top recruits decide to play their college ball.  I believe Eddie Goldman Crimson Tide jerseys will be a popular buy come the end of February.

There are certainly many other big names out there who are still very much undecided.  The 2013 National Champions could depend on who lands one of these big names.

GetYour 2012 Arkansas Razorbacks’ Tickets Today!

After missing out on a bowl game altogether in 2008, the Arkansas Razorbacks football program has been on the rise.  In 2009 they finished a solid season with a victory in the Liberty Bowl.  Last season, they managed to make their way into their first ever BCS bowl game with a birth in the Sugar Bowl versus the Ohio State Buckeyes.  And so far, the 2011 campaign has been a successful one with the Hogs off to an 8-1 start.  As good as they have looked in 2011, 2012 could finally be the year of the Hog.  Let’s fast forward and take a look at the 2012 football season.

While they will lose a lot of talent in the outgoing Senior class, the young talent continues to improve and will help for a very smooth transition on both sides of the ball.  Gone will be a stellar group of wide receivers, such as Joe Adams, Jarius Wright, and Greg Childs.  Losing those three will certainly hurt, but Arkansas has a ton of talent at the receiver position.  They will be especially well stocked if they land prized recruit Dorial Green-Beckham out of Missouri.  The best news on offense will be quarterback Tyler Wilson will be returning for his Senior season and star running back Knile Davis should be ready to go after missing the entire 2011 season with a broken ankle.  Also, the big Hogs up front protect Wilson and Davis will have another year of experience under their belts.

On defense, the major losses will be defensive end Jake Bequette and linebacker Jerry Franklin.  The defense has always been a little shaky under Petrino, but they also have seemingly improved just a little bit every year.  In the past, depth has been a  real problem as well, but they are slowly developing young talent in the hope that losing Senior leadership will not hurt too severely.  Tre Flowers is one name that comes to mind that has tremendous potential.  Yes, Hog fans, 2012 is looking bright…if we can beat Bama!

The Future Stars of College Football

Right now, we are smack dab in the middle of the most exciting part of the college football season.  Controversy, epic games and great plays have highlighted the months of October and November of the 2011 season.  For fans of some teams, however, they are already starting to look ahead to the 2012 football season.  So let’s take a quick look at some the top notch recruits that could be Heisman hopefuls in just a couple of years.

Dorial Green-Beckham, WR: Undecided

Depending on the recruiting service you prescribe to, Green-Beckham is somewhere in the top 3 or 4 of incoming freshmen.  Regardless of what number is put beside his name, their will unlikely be a more impactful freshmen in the 2012 campaign. Lightning-quick and great hands make him a safe bet to have a solid collegiate career, but it his height (6’7) that have many making comparisons to the Detroit Lions’ Calvin Johnson.  He is still weighing his options but it appears that he will be playing for the Oklahoma Sooners or the Arkansas Razorbacks next fall.  Either way he will be with a pass-happy offense that should utilize his skills and terrorize opposing defenses.

Mario Edwards, DE: Committed to Florida State

Ranked as the #1 prospect by most recruiting services, Edwards will almost certainly be starting his Freshmen season for the Seminoles.  Defensive line athletes are among the most coveted recruits because they can impact the game in a way that few other positions can.  Edwards is 6’4 and weighs in at 240 lbs., but it his speed that will force signal callers next season to get rid of the pigskin in a hurry.  Florida State had high aspirations of competing for a National Title in 2011, but with Edwards and other top notch recruits it maybe 2012 where the Seminoles really shine.

Next week: Johnathan Gray, Eddie Williams

BCS Breakdown: #8 Arkansas Razorbacks

Their may have not been a more impressive victory weekend than that of the Bobby Petrino led Arkansas Razorbacks.  They took down the 9th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks 44-28 in Fayetteville.  For the second straight year, the Razorbacks put up 40+ points against a defense that many experts believed to be the SEC’s third best (behind only the defenses of the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers).  If that was indeed the conferences’ third best defense, than Tyler Wilson and company have an excellent shot at winning out.

However, to the dismay of many Arkansans, the Razorbacks actually dropped a spot in the BCS rankings.  While the drop confused some, in the end the Razorbacks will have plenty of opportunities to rise in the rankings with tough games still to go against the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Tigers down in Baton Rouge.

The Razorbacks are doing much of their good offensive work under the national radar, thanks in large part to the successes of the Oklahoma State Cowboys’ veteran signal caller Brandon Weeden and the Stanford Cardinal superstar quarterback Andrew Luck.  Outside of these high profile names, few have been as effective as Wilson.  His favorite target Jarius Wright is having a stellar season that could get his name thrown into the Heisman race if he impresses against the Tigers in the “Battle for the Golden Boot” the day after Thanksgiving.

The Hogs have battled their way to an 8-1 overall record, despite losing their top notch running back Knile Davis at the beginning of the year to an ankle injury.  A inconsistent running game and, at times porous defense, has not been enough to keep Petrino’s squad from making noise in the SEC Western Division.  All of their success will be in vain however, if they cannot find a way to get the job done in Baton Rouge in a couple of weeks.

BCS Breakdown: LSU Tigers

As we approach the final month of the college football season, there is no doubt that Louisiana State University is well deserving of the top spot in the latest BCS rankings.  Fresh off their dramatic overtime win against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, the Tigers have proven to everyone that they are indeed the nation’s top team to this point (outside of one quack in California, go figure).

While their offense left much to be desired on Saturday night, their defense is loaded with talent at every position.  In fact, a majority of their backups would be starting at several of the other universities that are in the top ten of the BCS.  From the lightning quick Barkevious Mingo at defensive end to the sensational cornerback Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu, their is no soft spot in the Bengal Tiger’s defense.

Up next for LSU,  is the much improved but under-talented Hilltoppers from Western Kentucky.  They finish the season with a road contest against the lowly Ole Miss Rebels and finally a showdown in Baton Rouge against the 8th ranked Arkansas Razorbacks.  Trips to Atlanta and New Orleans will likely be on the line during this annual rivalry game for the “Golden Boot”.  The only thing that could stop this team is their perceived lack of offense.  They have had more success than many experts predicted this season on offense, but the game against the Crimson Tide showed many flaws still exist.

One thing is for sure, Les Miles will have his team fighting to the very end.  The “Mad Hatter”, as he is affectionately referred to, gets more out of his team than perhaps any other coach in America.  If LSU can get past the Hogs for the Golden Boot, they will very likely find themselves very close to home during bowl season.
